Some of the most-successful 4WDs have engines derived from earlier passenger cars.
The engine fitted to the first Toyota Landcruisers, and in improved form right up to the 1990s, was a copy of the Chevrolet's original six. A motor that had its origins way back in the Roaring Twenties!
Similarly, Nissans early 4-litre Patrols used a design licensed from Austin of England.
Rover of England took a similar tack when they released the legendary Range Rover in 1970. Oomph was provided a 1960s, Buick-designed V8. Originally offered as a 3.5-litre, the American engine, in gradually-enlarged capacities, has powered Range Rovers for more than thirty years, and was still being used in the Discovery until the release of the Ford-owned Discovery (LR3) in 2004. |
